Burnside’s Year 7 boys participated in their first rugby tournament yesterday.
In their first match they ran out winners against Bede Academy 5 tries to 1. Burnside played some excellent attacking rugby, offloading the ball out of contact and always looking for space with ball in hand. Joseph Lamb (2), Kyle Barcoe, Josh Patterson and Ben Emmerson getting the scores.
The second match against Ovingham Middle School was a thriller. Burnside scored first in the left hand corner through a determined run from Kyle Barcoe, breaking several tackles in the process. Ovingham them hit back with three excellent tries of their own. Burnside fought back with a try each from Joseph Lamb and Josh Patterson to level the match at 3-3.
In the final match Burnside played a talented ad experienced St Cuthberts side who won 3 tries to 0. However Burnside never gave in and came within inches of scoring on two occasions.
Well done to all those involved. Mr Metcalfe found it extremely difficult to select a 12 man squad from the 30+ players who had attended U12 trials, and could have easily selected two teams to enter yesterday’s tournament. Further games and tournaments will occur this year to give more Year 7 students the chance to represent Burnside in rugby.
