Making the lives of girls and young women of Gorgor Secondary School has always been one of the priorities of BBG-Building Futures Registered Charity No. 115062.  Over the 10 years of our school partnership with Gorgor secondary school we have aimed to support girls in at the school. Our first successful project was raising funds to build a new dormitory; this was completed in 2010 thanks to the generous donations of students and staff of Burnside Business and Enterprise College and the wider community of Wallsend.

Our most recent campaign GO FOR GORGOR GIRLS 2015 was launched when we discovered that lots of the girls lose up to 4 days per month of schooling (around 40 DAYS per year) because their families cannot afford sanitary towels.  Stories shared with us by staff from Gorgor during a visit in September 2014 highlighted the awful experiences some of the girls have during their periods. Girls in Year 11 studying Health and Social Care; along with their teacher Mrs Ellis took the lead in promoting this issue within school.  We contacted a charity (Afi-can) who provide reusable sanitary pads which last one year and an education programme for as little as £3.50 per student.

We have managed to raise £700 so far BUT need more … … During a recent visit in February 2015 to Gorgor student received their first supply of pads.

Our GO FOR GORGOR GIRLS 2015 campaign aims to raise £3000 to help fund:

  • re-useable sanitary packs and pads for the next 3 years
  • a series of education sessions on health, well-being and puberty for both girls and boys at Gorgor
  • provide funds to complete the building of suitable toilets for the girls to use
