Purpose
The Government states that the Pupil Premium, which is additional to main school funding, is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between certain groups of pupils by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most. It is allocated on the basis of the number of pupils who are known to be eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) or those pupils who have been eligible in the last 6 years of their education (Ever 6 FSM). It also includes any pupil who has parents in the Armed forces or pupils who are identified as being in foster care (Child Looked After). It was introduced in April 2011 to provide additional support for children from low income families.
