Burnside College students today celebrated a fantastic set of GCSE results. While nationally the pass rate fell to 73%, students at Burnside achieved a pass rate of 78% in their GCSEs.
Despite the pass rate falling nationally, the percentage of students who achieved a 4+ pass in both English and maths has stayed the same as last year 72%. This is a significant increase from 57% the last time students sat external exams in 2019.
Not only this, students secured a record number of grade 9s across twelve different subjects.
This is even more impressive when you consider the impact that school closures have had on students in this year group and to achieve such fantastic results is a testament to the hard work and attitude of these students during this time.
All the staff at Burnside College are incredibly proud of them and wish them well for the future.

This summer students sat external exams for the first time in three years. We’re delighted that our year 13 students this year achieved even higher grades than our outstanding exam results from 2019.
The average grade that students achieved in their A levels this summer was once again a grade B and in applied general qualifications the average was a distinction*. We had a higher proportion than ever of students achieving straight A/A*.
It’s been such a difficult couple of years for this year group. Their year 11 was cut short due to the start of the pandemic and students did not sit external GCSE exams. They then had much of year 12 disrupted by further school closures. To achieve such fantastic results is a great achievement and is testament to the hard work of staff and students over the last couple of years.
Everyone at Burnside is incredibly proud of their success.
