The Burnside Drama Club started a new season this week. Students are currently working on a physical theatre piece and some war poetry in preparation for the Burnside Remembrance Day Performance in November.
On Thursday 27th September 10 Year 11 girls attended the This Girls Future Event at Benfield. The day was aimed at girls who enjoy PE and are interested in a career within the sporting sector.
There were lots of activities on the day including leadership sessions, guidance on university choices and sports clubs, netball coaching camp but the highlight for the group was definitely meeting the GB athlete Laura Weightman and participating in a running session with her.
Everyone involved had an excellent day and they were a credit to the school!
Following the success of our open evening, we have had some parents ask for more information and the ability to see the school running during the day. If you would like a private tour please contact Mrs N Stephenson on 0191 2598500.
We are delighted to share with you our Summer Newsletter 2018.
As part of Burnside’s Summer Rewards Program 2018, students were rewarded with five giant inflatables on the school field. This included a Disco Dome and Total Wipeout!
Year 8 students who have worked hard on their Young Civic Award went on their final challenge yesterday; a hike along waggonways and the beach. We had the (now annual) stone stacking competition and a beach art challenge and finished with ice cream. Staff were very impressed with the behaviour of the students and it was a really enjoyable day.
Well done to all those who have passed this award and many thanks to the staff who gave up time throughout the year to help them complete it.
On Tuesday as a reward for their hard work in editing, directing, and producing BurnsideTV a group of students were taken to BBC Newcastle for an interactive tour of the studio and to see what it is like behind the scenes in a larger environment than they are used to. The students were allowed to view the Look North set, sets from tv shows filmed in the North East and for them to understand what does on when the national news switches to regional. At the end of the day, the students participated in a radio production including sound effects created the old-fashioned way.
On Tuesday 10th July students gave a fantastic performance of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘School of Rock’ to a sell-out audience! Thank you to everyone who came along on the night to support students. The show involved students ranging from Year 7 up to Year 12 with them taking on roles within the cast and the stage crew.
Before the show, each member of the cast was given a Burnside ‘School of Rock’ hoodie as a thank you for their hard work. Special thanks have to be given to the Burnside School Fund for covering the cost of the hoodies.
Overall it was a fantastic evening and students should be very proud of the show they produced!y produced!
Students from Year10 visited the Energy Academy in Wallsend to introduce them to the world of engineering. Over two days 85 students attended the visit and took part in a range of activities such as:
- An F1 challenge which involved changing the wheels on a simulation of a Formula 1 car.
- A Fabrics workshops to build an I Pad holder.
- Chocolate welding to show how bridges can support huge weights through welding.
- The use of CAD software to design engineering parts.
Alongside the challenge, the students met with local employers as well as finding out about local apprenticeships and engineering courses in the region. The whole day was a great success and allowed for the students to get hands-on experience with engineering!
Due to England’s involvement in the world cup semi-final on Wednesday 11th July, we have made the decision to perform only one performance of School of Rock on Tuesday 10th July. All tickets purchased for the Wednesday will now be valid on the Tuesday evening. There are also still tickets available for Tuesday’s performance.
If you had Wednesday tickets, but are unable to attend on Tuesday, please contact school for a full refund.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused but having discussed this at length we feel that the sporting event of national interest taking place on Wednesday will have a significant impact on the event. Thank you for your understanding with this matter.
