On Friday a group of staff took on a 10-mile charity walk after school for Maggies and Macmillan. This was the second Lulham Five Bridges Walk in honour of Joanne, an amazing member of our team at Burnside, and as well as raising lots of money for two great causes it was also a fabulous way to spend a Friday evening. Well done to everyone involved!
Saturday, June 30th was the first of two Saturday rehearsals that students and staff attended in preparation for our whole school show; ‘School of Rock’. Members of the cast rehearsed on stage, whilst the stage crew got to grips with scene changes and props lists! Both students and staff are very much looking forward now to the final shows!
The Show is on Tuesday the 10th of July and Wednesday the 11th of July. Don’t miss it!
A group of Burnside students played a short set at the Wallsend Festival on Saturday. They did the school and the community proud.

A reminder that code club is on in Mrs Galbraith’s room on Thursdays 3-4pm, open to all Year 7 and 8 students. Next week (27th June) we will be using Scratch to program drones, on 4th July we will be working with Raspberry Pi’s and on 11th July we will be working with Lego Mindstorms.
Once again, our students did us proud. 8 music students and 4 art students represented Burnside at the TICE Final show held at Newcastle University. They worked hard all year for this show where they presented their music and art skills. The public was overwhelmed by their abilities! Here are two songs to listen to https://soundcloud.com/this-is-creative-enterprise/sets/class-of-2018.
Thanks to all who came and supported!
We are introducing a new all-in-one communication system which will allow us to provide better information to parents via text/push messages to your mobile phone. A new, free, smartphone app for parents is now available for download called âSchool Gatewayâ for Apple (iOS 8 on the iPhone 4S or later, iPad, iPod Touch) and Android (4.0 / Ice Cream Sandwich or later) devices.
School Gateway will also allow you to view your child’s/children’s attendance, merits and concerns, as well as book parents evening appointments. As of June 26th 2018, we will be discontinuing the use of our current parent portal. The parent portal link on our website will change to the new School Gateway (Schoolcomms) system- https://login.schoolgateway.com/0/auth/login.
Please could you download this new app to your phone (itâs free) as it will help us improve communication with parents.
The set-up process is simple and will take no more than a couple of minutes:
1. Search for âSchool Gatewayâ in the Apple App Store/Google Play or on your phone go to www.schoolgateway.com/apple (Apple) or www.schoolgateway.com/android (Android)
2. Install the app and if you are asked then say yes to âAllow Push Notificationsâ
3. When you launch School Gateway for the first time, please select âNew Userâ and enter the email address and mobile telephone number you have registered with the school
4. The system will send a PIN code to your phone; please enter this PIN code and the app will be activated for you.
As soon as youâve got the system set-up, all of the text messages we send you will appear in the app; youâll receive notifications/alerts as normal.
If you have any further questions, please email ict-support@burnsidecollege.org.uk and we will be happy to help. If you have recently changed your email address or mobile telephone number, please let us know so we can update our records.
Thank you for your help.
The year 10 form representatives have recently launched a campaign against littering and in particular recycling plastics. The first part of this saw a group of them carry out a litter pick around the school grounds and its borders. They filled six bags with a lot of rubbish and a whole lot of single-use plastics. Their aim is to raise awareness around the issues and to host a weekly litter pick. Fantastic effort by this group.
Year 10 student Belliano Hoxholli has not missed a day of school since the start of the academic year in September 2017. His name was picked out by the attendance officer before half term to be given a special prize to acknowledge this. Mr Jamieson presented Belliano and his mum, who has done a fantastic job in supporting Belliano come to school every day, with a ÂŁ50 ASDA shopping voucher.
A year 10 student, Josh Stoneman, is now the Under 16s British National Champion for Judo. In April he won all five bouts in a competition in Kettering.
This is a fantastic achievement-well done Josh.
