On Wednesday 6th June a group of year 8 and 9 students took part in a STEM challenge day at the University of Sunderland. Although we failed to win on the day the students were incredible and a credit to the school!

Music students from year 7-year13 performed at our first ever Soloist of the Year Competition. They were all fantastic- a credit to the school. Peter, year 7, won the best newcomer. Lewis, Year 12, won achievement of effort throughout the year.
Our overall winner of Soloist of the Year was won by Ronan, Year 12. Huge thanks to all the students, their family and staff who supported this event; especially our judges Grahame Wright, Mr Jamieson and Georgia Biddle.
Thank you so much!
This week the Year 10 and 12 Performing Arts and Music students went to the Theatre Royal in Newcastle to see the blockbuster musical ‘Evita’ which is based on the life of Argentine political leader Eva PerĆ³n, the second wife of Argentine president Juan PerĆ³n. The story follows Evita’s early life, rise to power, charity work, and eventual death. Students thoroughly enjoyed the chance to experience live professional theatre and several theatregoers commented on how nice it was to see such well behaved young people enjoying the arts.
This week our Year 13 Performing Arts students gave their final performance to an invited audience of friends and family. The performance consisted of some instant improvisation whereby the students acted out scenes and scenarios on the spot. This was followed by the first act of John Godber’s play ‘Shakers’. The students received some lovely feedback from the audience regarding the quality of their performance. A fantastic performance for the students to finish on.
What a fantastic night we had at the annual Burnside Awards Celebration. Over 100 students gained certificates including Duke of Edinburgh Awards, Young Civic Awards, First Aid certificates, environment awards, and our very own Burnside Stars. Students who had won competitions such as ’20 Things to Do in the Summer Holidays’ and the Big Burnside Potato Race were also awarded their prizes and those on the School Council were thanked for their service to the school. Well done to everyone!
We are very proud to announce that we have had 8 more students gain their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award this term. These 8 Year 13 students have followed a rigorous programme of expeditions, fundraising, leadership activities, sport and gardening which has taken 18 months to complete. Many congratulations go to Sam, Melissa, Nathan, Peter, Sam, Kay, Becca, and Alan – we are very proud of you all.
We are delighted to share with you our Spring Newsletter 2018.
Emblematic are delighted to announce the extension of their Longbenton self-service schoolwear shop. Having supplied schools, clubs and businesses for over 30 years, there is increasing demand from schools to be stocked in the shop and Emblematic are extending the shop floor area for summer 2018 to improve customersā shopping experience.
The additional space and extra till will provide much-needed relief during the busy summer period, improving convenience and reducing waiting times.
The Longbenton branch is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm all year round with additional Saturday opening 10am to 4pm from the beginning of June to the end of September (please visit emblematic for confirmed opening hours and to purchase uniform if you prefer to order online).
As a result of parent feedback Emblematic is phasing in a new supplier for Burnside uniform. A trialled number of parents have trialled a range of manufacturers and the preferred supplier is Blue Max Banner. Banner is a popular choice and these are successfully used for a large number of schools.
