School of Rock

13th July 2018Andrew Gray

On Tuesday 10th July students gave a fantastic performance of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘School of Rock’ to a sell-out audience! Thank you to everyone who came along on the night to support students. The show involved students ranging from Year 7 up to Year 12 with them taking on roles within the cast and the stage crew.

Before the show, each member of the cast was given a Burnside ‘School of Rock’ hoodie as a thank you for their hard work. Special thanks have to be given to the Burnside School Fund for covering the cost of the hoodies.

Overall it was a fantastic evening and students should be very proud of the show they produced!y produced!

Energy Academy

11th July 2018Andrew Gray

Students from Year10 visited the Energy Academy in Wallsend to introduce them to the world of engineering. Over two days 85 students attended the visit and took part in a range of activities such as:

  • An F1 challenge which involved changing the wheels on a simulation of a Formula 1 car.
  • A Fabrics workshops to build an I Pad holder.
  • Chocolate welding to show how bridges can support huge weights through welding.
  • The use of CAD software to design engineering parts.

Alongside the challenge, the students met with local employers as well as finding out about local apprenticeships and engineering courses in the region. The whole day was a great success and allowed for the students to get hands-on experience with engineering!

All tickets purchased for the Wednesday will now be valid on the Tuesday evening. There are also still tickets available for Tuesday’s performance.

If you had Wednesday tickets, but are unable to attend on Tuesday, please contact school for a full refund.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused but having discussed this at length we feel that the sporting event of national interest taking place on Wednesday will have a significant impact on the event. Thank you for your understanding with this matter.

Staff Charity Walk

9th July 2018Andrew Gray

On Friday a group of staff took on a 10-mile charity walk after school for Maggies and Macmillan. This was the second Lulham Five Bridges Walk in honour of Joanne, an amazing member of our team at Burnside, and as well as raising lots of money for two great causes it was also a fabulous way to spend a Friday evening. Well done to everyone involved!

TICE Final Show

21st June 2018Andrew Gray

Once again, our students did us proud. 8 music students and 4 art students represented Burnside at the TICE Final show held at Newcastle University. They worked hard all year for this show where they presented their music and art skills. The public was overwhelmed by their abilities! Here are two songs to listen to https://soundcloud.com/this-is-creative-enterprise/sets/class-of-2018.

Thanks to all who came and supported!

Parental Communication – School Gateway app

20th June 2018Andrew Gray

We are introducing a new all-in-one communication system which will allow us to provide better information to parents via text/push messages to your mobile phone. A new, free, smartphone app for parents is now available for download called ‘School Gateway’ for Apple (iOS 8 on the iPhone 4S or later, iPad, iPod Touch) and Android (4.0 / Ice Cream Sandwich or later) devices.

School Gateway will also allow you to view your child’s/children’s attendance, merits and concerns, as well as book parents evening appointments. As of June 26th 2018, we will be discontinuing the use of our current parent portal. The parent portal link on our website will change to the new School Gateway (Schoolcomms) system- https://login.schoolgateway.com/0/auth/login.

Please could you download this new app to your phone (it’s free) as it will help us improve communication with parents.

The set-up process is simple and will take no more than a couple of minutes:

1. Search for “School Gateway” in the Apple App Store/Google Play or on your phone go to www.schoolgateway.com/apple (Apple) or www.schoolgateway.com/android (Android)

2. Install the app and if you are asked then say yes to “Allow Push Notifications”

3. When you launch School Gateway for the first time, please select ‘New User’ and enter the email address and mobile telephone number you have registered with the school

4. The system will send a PIN code to your phone; please enter this PIN code and the app will be activated for you.

As soon as you’ve got the system set-up, all of the text messages we send you will appear in the app; you’ll receive notifications/alerts as normal.

If you have any further questions, please email ict-support@burnsidecollege.org.uk and we will be happy to help. If you have recently changed your email address or mobile telephone number, please let us know so we can update our records.

Thank you for your help.
