On Monday 28th November BTEC Business Level 3 students went to EDF in Sunderland to meet Tina a Senior Operations Manager in the smart meter business. Tina spoke to them about the business, the business structure, the different types of job roles and opportunities for students leaving college and the types of employability skills that large firms would look for in recruiting new staff. The students had a tour of the building, looking at the different facilities provided by EDF for their staff. These facilities included the large open planned call centre, chill out areas, canteen, gym and rest areas.
On Saturday 19th November 38 students and 4 staff travelled down to Twickenham to watch England play Fiji. After a 6am frosty start we all made it down safely to enjoy chips and rugby! A great day was had by all and students behaved in exemplary fashion. A big thanks to staff for giving their time and organising the trip! Miss Peel.

Last night our FLL mentor, Callum Cairns from Hewlett Packard, visited us to help us prepare for the FLL competition in January. Callum will be working with us every Monday to make sure we stand the best chance at progressing in the regional heat at the Langdale Centre. Students are demonstrating excellent teamwork and problem solving skills and Callum’s support was extremely welcome.

6 groups of Y10 and Y11 GCSE Business students are entering into the Student Investor Challenge. The Student Investor Challenge is the UK’s premier investment competition with over 400,000 students from 2,500 schools benefiting from the experience in previous years. There are a whole host of prizes available, including a trip to New York!
During the challenge teams will invest virtual money in a set of stocks and other investment instruments which is linked to the stock markets. This year, teams must create two portfolios rather than one:
- The Active Investor portfolio allows teams to trade every day. Each month, the team with the most improved Active Investor portfolio will be rewarded with a prize.
- The Strategic Investor portfolio which allows a limited number of trades per month, encouraging long term thinking.
Teams have a virtual £100,000 to invest in each portfolio. Teams are advised to invest the full amount of cash they have at all times, as teams keeping more than £15,000 in cash in either portfolio will be subject to a daily Windfall Tax of £1,000!
Good luck to all students involved!
