Well done to everyone who took part in The Big Burnside Potato Race. Please share the results with all those who took part and many congratulations to Simoon, Liam and Chloe who were the winners! If you took part and did not come to dig up your potatoes – we have sold them and the money is going to charity. An amazing 67 people took part this year and grew an incredible 18 and a half kilos of potatoes; which is our biggest year yet!

Determination, grit and resilience were the words of the week for Year 11 and Year 13 students who took part in the Duke of Edinburgh expeditions in The Yorkshire Dales. The groups were battered by strong winds; heavy rain; blisters; waterlogged campsites and broken tents. Despite the poor conditions they all managed to finish their expeditions through a mixture of determination, fantastic teamwork and cake – some of them even manged it with a smile on their faces! Well done to everyone involved; I’m very proud of you all and it was fantastic to see such amazing young people achieving so much. I won’t embarrass you by putting photos up of you but I did see a lovely waterfall en route and there were some beautiful views! Thanks as usual to all the staff who gave up their time to come and help.

On Monday we held out first Lego League club meeting! First Lego League is a global science and technology competition with over 250,000 young people taking part each year. Only six students in Year 9 have been selected to take part, as this is a unique and exciting opportunity we have chosen only students who have demonstrated a love of learning and the desire to develop their skills in Computer programming. During the meetings students work as a team to program a robot to complete various challenges using Lego. On Friday 13th January, students will visit the Langdale Centre where they will compete with their robot against other schools in the area, they will also be interviewed by panels of judges on their approach to the Lego Core Values (for more information visit www.firstlegoleague.org/about-fll) and on the design of their robot.
Sixth Form gardeners have been picking apples from our orchard this week – and this year we have a fantastic crop. We will be using them to make sauces, jams and preserves for Christmas so look out for further updates on this.
