It’s been a very busy week for the DofE gardening club who have been preserving all the fruit they grew throughout the summer. Week one of jam making is complete with lots of lovely treats made. We’re only half way through though with another batch of cooking next week!
Year 8 and 9 students have recently started on a new STEM adventure. They will be working with various departments in the school on a ‘theme park’ project. In this project they will be building various parts of theme parks and designing their own rides.
They will do practical work using the rides that they have built, increasing their numeracy skills, as well as their technological skills when building the rides.
The project will see them gain a Crest bronze level award, which can be used toward their Duke of Edinburgh award. The students that are successful will be going on a reward trip at the end of the year.

Y7 English students take part in this year’s Northern Children’s Book Festival
A group of students visited Howdon Library to hear John Hegley perform. John is an English performance poet, comedian, musician and songwriter, and hilarious to watch.
He is up in our region performing for different schools as part of the NCBF. He performed some of his own and other poets poems, accompanying himself on STEVE, his mandolin. His session combined humour, poetry and music to show students just how much fun poetry can be.
The group ended up by taking part in writing their poem carrying on from the first few lines of Adrian Mitchell’s poem entitled YES, and then performing it with some amazing dance moves!!
A good time was had by all.
Students in year 12 had an amazing opportunity to visit the RVI anatomy and physiology labs in November this year, enabling students to get a real insight into the complexities of the workings of the human body.
In an exclusive trip students were shown the mechanisms of the heart and lungs, the complexity of tendons and ligaments allowing movement in the forearm, knee and hip joints and a rather insightful opportunity to get their hands dirty in feeling their way through the human digestive system. With the help of undergraduate and postgraduate students from Newcastle Sunderland University the students were able to get a real taste for university life when completing a biology related course such as medicine, dentistry and human anatomy.
To quote one of our aspiring medics ‘ “it’s not every Friday afternoon you have the chance to hold a human heart” , well it maybe that this opportunity will inspire other students to peruse further study of biology and the complexity of life to produce the future surgeons and medical staff of the North East.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award students are working very hard to collect items to go in shoe boxes to be given to children all over the world who may not get presents this Christmas [the boxes predominantly go to orphanages or children living in poverty]. This is a project we have supported in school for the last 20 years.
They will be coming round to form groups to try to encourage everyone to get involved. Here is a link to a Youtube Video showing an example of where your Shoe Boxes end up.
The type of things people could bring in are:
- sweets
- toiletries: soap, toothbrush, hairbrush, etc [no liquid – but toothpaste seems okay]
- toys
- stationery
- games
- hats, scarves and gloves
The deadline for us finishing the boxes is Tuesday 24th November. The D of E students will then take the boxes to the local depot – which is a fascinating trip in itself.
I hope this is something you could all support … and thanks in advance for your help! – Miss Wallis
Burnside will be closed for Half Term from Monday 26th October 2015 to Monday 2nd November 2015. School will re-open for Students on Tuesday 3rd November 2015.
I have been out to Cramlington Healthwise Ladies Group this morning with 2 students from 6th Form Cherise Battensby and Amy Timmins. Together we presented our Go for Gorgor girls campaign and raised £136. I am incredibly proud of the students who represented the school with pride. The ladies we spoke to were very impressed with our campaign and the lengths that Burnside College students will go to when helping others.

The DofE Gardening Club is in the process of harvesting all their autumn crops which has included lots of fruit from the orchard. The gardeners have learnt to store the fruit correctly and, over the next few weeks, they will preserve it in the form of lots of lovely jams and chutneys; which will be on sale just before Christmas.
