Burnside Gold Stage TICE Fashion students were invited to a ‘Fashion Futures’ talk on 14th May, at The Baltic centre of Arts at Gateshead. This was part of Northumbria Universities fashion Week. Normally we are invited to the fashion show produced and performed by the designers in the final year of their 4 year degree. However this visit was slightly different in the fact it was more focussed on IAG opportunities and routes within the fashion industry. The students probably would have never realised that there were so many different jobs related to the fashion industry and of course future routes for them to follow for a career choice. Once we arrived at the Baltic we took our seats and listened to 3 fashion Industry talks:
1pm – The students listened to an informal discussion; focussing on how they got to the position within their ‘job roles’.
The panel featured successful Northumbria University Alumni; Michelle Taylor founder of luxury lingerie brand, Tallulah Love; Charis Younger, designer at hi-end fashion brand All Saints; Kate Ablett, designer at Berghaus, alongside Darren Spurling, Managing Director of international footwear designer Terry De Havilland. The conversation was inspiring and very interesting that the key word from this panel was ‘resilience’.
2pm – The students listened to an informal interview led by Laura Weir, an eminent fashion and style journalist for Vogue with one of the UK’s leading fashion designers Henry Holland. This was more off the cuff; but was intriguing that he completed a journalism degree then out of fun designed a range of T shirts with some friends and that was the start of his passion for following through his dream of being a designer.
3pm – The students had the opportunity to listen to an inspiring, real life journey of the career so far, of Alexandra Shulman OBE, Editor in Chief of British Vogue. This lady is one of the most influential figures in fashion and she highlighted how she was responsible for increasing Vogue’s readership to over one million.
I hope when the students returned from this IAG outing, they had time to reflect upon the messages given to them by people already working within the ‘career field of fashion’. I found this afternoon inspiring and thought provoking.
