As part of our reporting system and in keeping with previous years we are repeating Target Setting Day. This will give you and your child the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress across all curriculum areas with their Form Tutors, receive a detailed Progress Report and set targets for the future. We are very confident that this will be a successful and worthwhile venture judging from feedback that we received from parents last year. School Governors and Connexions will be in attendance should you wish to speak to them or find out how they work with us to raise standards and support students.
Target Setting Day is on Thursday 26th March 2015 from 9.00am until 7.00pm and will involve students in all year groups including Sixth Form who will only come into school on the day with you at the allocated interview time and will go home afterwards. Parents who have more than one child in school should ensure that their children inform Form Tutors that their appointment times should be kept fairly close together so that you do not need to make more than one visit to school during the day. We hope that all parents will come along to the meeting which we will arrange to be mutually convenient.
Following parental feedback last year, many of you told us you would like to have time to read the written report in advance of your meeting with the Form Tutor. In response we have organised for the written report to be made available to you when you arrive in school and therefore we ask that you arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled appointment so you have time to read the report before discussing it with the Tutor.
This Friday 13th is Comic Relief. To help support Comic Relief Burnside will be running a non-uniform day with a £1 donation. Mr Welch will also be running a Bake Sale in Pavilion 1 at Breaktime and lunch time. All proceeds will support the Comic Relief Charity.
For further information for Parents and Guardians please refer to the the letter below. This letter will also be delivered home with students.

Students and Staff at Burnside have raised over £800 in 3 months to fund a project by I – Care (Afri-can foundation) to provide re-usable sanitary pads. Girls in Gorgor school can miss 3-5 days of school every month totalling over 40 days annually as a result of lack of financial resources to afford the cost of sanitary towels. Most of these girls use unhygienic clothing materials to keep dry during their menses, a situation that on many occasions causes embarrassment as the materials are leaky. This issue is inhibiting the academic potential of the girls at Gorgor. So Mrs Ellis and her Year 11 Health and Social Care class researched possible options – linking with a charity ( Afric – can foundation) in Amsterdam and for less than £3.50 we could buy a re-usable sanitary pack which will last ONE YEAR for ONE girl.
The Year 11 Health and Social care students presented the story to staff and students in school in December 2014 and by February 2015 had raised over 50% of the funds needed. With a generous personal donation from a member of the community we were able to fund the project and on February 13th 2015 Gladys, Nikkita and Willy from I-Care arrived at Gorgor school (along with 3 member of the BBG-Building futures board – Julie Thompson, Marie Rooney and Rosalind Elliott)and issued out pads along with a 2 hours Health education programme to both boys and girls at the school. As part of a collaboration with Newcastle University aimed at raising aspirations amongst younger students towards University as an option for them 15 of our Y8 students attended a NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM!
As our students mixed with others from schools around the region the programme started with icebreaker tasks and subject specific sessions held around the University Campus. Students then worked their way around a carousel of activities at the Great North Museum: Hancock and ended their evening with an interactive quiz before bed time; sleeping on roll mats amongst the exhibits!
Students finally took part in group work competition requiring them to develop a student society to be show-cased at a ‘Society Fair’ on the final day of the event.
This has hopefully planted the seed that not only is a University course achievable for them, but also that is can be fun!
By all accounts our students had a brilliant time, if not very much sleep!
