It might have been a cold, wet and murky morning, but that didn’t stop the Burnside Samba group from performing at Cullercoats beach in support of the ‘Changing Lives’ fun day, which was held on the 20th September.
It was definitely the first time that the Samba Band had performed at the end of a harbour wall or on the beach!
A great time was had by all.

The science department took 39 students to the ‘Centre of Life’ to reward their extra-curricular participation and positive learning attitude. There was a great deal of enthusiasm and curiosity- we were visiting the body works exhibit- but also sensitivity and maturity when taking into account the nature of the materials they were viewing. Also the 3 year groups showed positive interactions and were respectful and often kind to people they would not normally speak to. As part of the trip, we also had the opportunity to ride the 4D motion simulator- this was great fun but at times a little bit scary- some extreme bravery was witnessed from some students!
We all had a brilliant day out and it was great fun! Mr Randall described the event in a nutshell:
‘This is what happens when you volunteer and participate. You are taking advantage of the opportunities made available to you and you will develop a set of behaviours worthy of reward in the future. You may have to wait for the reward but it is worth the wait!’
So everyone, get involved, who knows what next year’s trip might be or when!
Coursework Visit for year 12 Applied Science and Biology Students
As the weather turns nice students studying the principles of Ecology in sixth form gain some insight into the techniques and strategies that Marine biologist and Conservation Ecologists use to survey and monitor populations of living things in the environment. We have a diverse range of wildlife locally and perhaps we sometimes underestimate the wildlife right beneath our noses. Therefore, we take year 12 students to St’Mary’s Lighthouse at Whitley bay to survey the marine habitat.
This year has been one of exceptional enthusiasm and a bumper cohort of future Scientists therefore we would like to celebrate their efforts by sharing some of their discoveries. This year we were graced with the presence of a Grey Seal and a diverse selection of Crabs, brown shrimp, star fish, barnacles and Limpets to mention a few! A fun day was had by all!
If you are interested in Marine conservation and/or Ecology there are a series of local events as detailed below:
