Sixth Formers studying Health and Social Care and Travel and Tourism had a great few days away at Kielder last week. Health and Social care students helped to run Christmas crafts at the Kielder First School and visited the Calvert Trust with the Travel students. Calvert Trust is a holiday centre for people with disabilities. Travel students also investigated tourism and customer service in the area and had a go at many of the adventurous activities on offer. Everyone got fully involved with the team building activities and they were all a credit to Burnside. Thank you to all the staff who gave up their time to come and help.
Year 13 students this summer celebrated receiving the best A Level results the school has ever recorded. Early indications suggest that academic results will be the best in North Tyneside, with over 80% of entries A*- C grade. This will put us top 10% nationally for progress. Vocational results could put Burnside in the top 20 schools in the country with 99% Distinction* grades.
Students have moved on to a range of world leading universities including Cambridge, Durham, Manchester and Newcastle. We are very proud to continue our 100% success rate for applications to courses including Medicine, Nursing, Midwifery and Primary Education, among others.
Students should be extremely proud of their achievements and we wish them the best of luck for the future.
Students and staff involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Award at Burnside spent the first few days of the holidays in the Yorkshire Dales taking part in Silver and Gold expeditions. Silvers had to walk for 3 days and Golds for 4 – each carrying all that they would need; camping overnight on different campsites each night and doing a project along the way. Miss Wallis had a ‘bit of a moment’ on the way home when she realised that this was her last adventure with the Golds; many of whom have been doing activities with DofE & Mayor’s Award since they were in Year 7. We are pleased to say that everyone passed with flying colours and were a credit to the school in the way they looked after each other and worked as a team. Many thanks go to all the staff that supported the award and the assessors who also volunteered their time.
Y11 students returning to Burnside in September have started their transition work this week. Today we visited Northumbria University to help the students think about their medium term futures and then we had lunch in Portofino’s. Next week, Y11 return to participate in more transition activities, including A Level taster lessons.
Students studying Travel and Tourism in Year 12 went on a trip this week to investigate why tourists visit Whitley Bay. We were very lucky with the weather and managed some time on the beach and an ice cream as well as visiting all the tourist attractions in the area.
This is the 3rd visit these students have been on, having previously visited Kielder and Durham and o’nce again, the students behaviour was impeccable and they were a pleasure to be with.
Sixth Formers studying Travel and Tourism went on a visit to Durham yesterday to investigate why it is such a popular place for tourists to visit. They paid visits to the Cathedral, the Heritage Centre, the market place and went on a riverside walk. On the way home they had a quick stop at The Angel of The North to look at the views. Miss Wallis would like to commend the students on their politeness when dealing with members of the public and their behaviour throughout the whole trip.
Burnside Students Cameron Osborne and Kayden Xie have made Burnside history by receiving conditional offers to the prestigious Cambridge University to study French, German and Biology. Burnside School Reporters Bethany, Amy and Sarah have been to speak to the hardworking sixth formers and their proud Head of Year, Mr Hedley to get their reactions to this fantastic news.

Lee Casey, TICE Mentor, was in school to support students in Y12 and Y13 BTEC Business through their ‘Insight Stage’ of the programme. This cohort are working on the creative enterprise programme which is aimed at young people who are thinking of pursuing a career within the creative and digital industries. This allows students to gain an understanding about the variety of digital and creative industries there are, and the type of jobs in these sectors.
During the day students were developing their own teamwork skills through a balloon challenge, exploring the creative industries and routes into higher education, as well as developing skills in generating and presenting business ideas through a business pitch. The students had some fantastic ideas about their own apps linking to different areas of the creative sectors.
The next step for the programme will involve the ‘Explore Stage’ where students will spend two days in industry, which will be tailored towards their own professional development in the various creative sectors.
Well done to all students involved!
The PFI partnership works together not only to provide outstanding facilities for Burnside students but also to help them to develop important skills that can lead to employment.
PFI partner, North Tyneside Leisure offered a Pool Lifeguard training course to Sixth Form students. PFI partners Kajima (Construction) and MITIE (Facilities Management) generously provided £900 of sponsorship to six Burnside students bringing the cost of the course for them to only £75 per person.
Four of the students, Daniel Atkinson, Kyle Mason, Callum Doyle and Ellie Mason became qualified lifeguards. Daniel and Kyle are currently working regularly for North Tyneside at Hadrian Leisure and Callum is working in a private health club while they finish their studies at Burnside.
