Over the course of the day the students took part in various activities including one-to-one mentoring sessions, a society competition, a campus tour and other fun activities. This was a fantastic opportunity for our students to visit a university campus and find out more about Higher Education and their options for the future. These beneficial events are to help students increase their awareness of Higher Education, raise their aspirations and improve their teamwork skills.
The students enjoyed themselves and felt they benefited from this greatly, they were very confident and got involved in all activities without hesitation. Well Done Year 9s.
Raising Aspirations and Widening Participation
A group of Year 7 pupils on Monday and Tuesday last week had an adventure to Newcastle University!
UniVenture was an opportunity for your students to take part in a range of fun, interactive and educational sessions assisted by current University students. This included a University quiz, a treasure hunt and a bridge making competition. These beneficial sessions were to help increase their awareness of Higher Education, raise their aspirations and improve their teamwork skills.
They had a great time one group even winning the bridge making competition. Well done Year 7s.
Post 16 results from the Summer 2015 were validated by the government in February 2016. They have been confirmed as an outstanding set of results which puts Burnside 6th form in the Top 15% Nationally for Vocational progress (number 1 in North Tyneside) and Top 25% Nationally for Academic progress.
Progress is the number 1 benchmark for OFSTED in deciding the effectiveness of a school’s teaching and learning. It is based on every individual student’s prior attainment and how much the school has added to and build on that in order to get them the best result possible.
We are delighted with the results and it shows especially how we cater for students across all subjects that they can take at A level here. Indeed, we are one of only two schools in the whole of the North East who are Top 20 for both of these measures, showing how difficult it is to be achieving so highly in both of those areas.
As well as fantastic progression routes to both University and higher apprenticeships, Burnside 6th form is clearly an outstanding option for continuing with further education in North Tyneside.
